Spofford Rainbow

Spofford Rainbow

Photographs of rainbows always show a lovely spectrum of colors, but the best images are more than just a "picture of a rainbow". It is the surrounding compositional elements which provide a sense of place and context, that makes a rainbow image compelling. Double rainbow over Spofford, New Hampshire.

This weeks blog is about getting the most out of these spectacular, but fleeting, displays. It takes planning, luck and a little physics. Learn how to find the photographic Pot of Gold.

USA TODAY - News, Travel, Weather, Entertainment, Sports, Technology, U.S. & World

USA TODAY - News, Travel, Weather, Entertainment, Sports, Technology, U.S. & World ;.. The sentencing closes one chapter of China's biggest political crisis in two decades, but also leaves open questions over the fate of Gu's husband, Bo Xilai, who was dismissed in March as the powerful Communist Party boss of the major city of Chongqing.
Bo's dismissal and his wife's murder trial come at a sensitive time in China, with party leaders handing over power soon to a younger generation. At one time Bo was considered a candidate for a top position.
The lawyer He said he had to discuss the verdict with the Heywood family and did not know if they would lodge an appeal.
"We respect the court's ruling today. Thank you all for your concern," He said.
State media say Gu confessed to intentional homicide at a one-day trial held here Aug. 9 under heavy guard. The media reports — the court has been closed to international media — say she and Heywood had a dispute over money and Heywood allegedly threatened her son.
Gu was accused of luring the victim to a Chongqing hotel, getting him drunk and then pouring cyanide into his mouth.

BBC News - China's ghost towns and phantom malls

BBC News - China's ghost towns and phantom malls ;.. "We have spoken a lot about these ghost towns in Ireland and Spain recently [but China] is Ireland and Spain on steroids," says Kevin Doran, a senior investment fund manager at Brown Shipley in the UK.
Investment in infrastructure accounts for much of China's GDP - the country is said to have built the equivalent of Rome every two months in the past decade. And with such a large pool of labour, it is harder to put the brakes on when growth slows and supply outstrips demand.
"You have got seven to eight million people entering the workforce in China every single year, so you have to give them something to do in order to retain the legitimacy of the government," says Doran.
"Maybe 10 or 15 years ago they were doing things that made sense - roads, rail, power stations etc - but they have now got to the point where it's investment for investment's sake."
So which are the most striking of these white elephants?
