August 5, 2013 at 1:32 PMOn 6th August 1945, the Japanese city of Hiroshima was devastated by the dropping of an atomic bomb, designed to force the country to surrender and bring the Second World War to an end. Three days later, a second bomb was dropped on the city of Nagasaki. As many as 250,000 people are believed to have lost their lives as a result of the two attacks - many as a result of radiation sickness and burns over the following days, weeks, month and years. Unknown thousands of other survivors - and their descendants - went on to suffer cancers, deformities and other illnesses - the effects being felt to the present day.The twin bombings - still the only use of nuclear weapons in wartime - are commemorated every year: symbols of the horrors of war, the terrors of the nuclear age, and a reminder of how the world - and especially Japan - has moved on since those years of global conflict.To remember the anniversary, we look back at the end of WWII and the key moments in Japan's postwar recovery. - See more at: http://rayloke1-china.blogspot.com/2013/08/japan-from-hiroshima-to-abenomics.html#comment-form
